Report on Mayo's Rock Dam [manuscript], 1912-1913, 2008.

This report to C. D. Carter, Superintendent of the Charlottesville Water Dept., on the state of Mayo's Rock Dam (later known as Lower Ragged Mountain Dam) was written by "Civil Engineer," probably University of Virginia engineering professor John Lloyd Newcomb among whose papers it was found. It includes investigations made by N. Wilson Davis, of the University of Virginia, 1912 December 24, and David J. Howell, apparently the dam's designer, 1913 February 11. The report details observed leakages in the newly built dam due to poor construction practices, poor quality concrete and failure to build as designed. The author recommends several corrective measures and warns that the condition of the dam could worsen in the future. The collection also contains background information on the dam, 2008, supplied by Richard Defibaugh, retired water manager, Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority.
